Scary Fun?

Anything that is too scary is not fun.

A couple of Halloween's ago, Kenz and I and her mommy trick or treated in a neighborhood where the houses are close together.  The front yards were heavily displayed with graves and skeletons and spider webs. The doors were opend by mean warty witches and monsters with green eyes who were frowning. Pretty soon we were avoiding the houses that looked like they might be too scary. To be a little scared is fun, it's a surprise; to be bewildered is not.

Halloween is fun, but anything that is too scary is not fun.  Some of this stuff is too scary for little children and sometimes they don't admit it.  They need grown-up sensitivity to help them sort out the real from the fake.

Even the Halloween aisle at the drugstore has those machines which talk in very low voices,  saying "Where are going? Hey, where are going?" when you walk by. These are scary to little ones who don't understand batteries.

There is so much fun to be had on Halloween, costumes, candy, pumpkins and friends. But, anything that is too scary is not fun, even if it is make-believe.

Happy Halloween

This is a great point to bring up. Especially scary are those adults that dress up in scary costume and approach the little children on the street as they trick or treat. We have that happen here in town each year. I wish these few individuals would get it that they are not entertaining the little ones but terrifying them and ruining their night.

Your very true post brought back a memory from last Halloween. My granddaughter was a little over 1 last halloween and me and her mom had her at Target. I was a few isles behind them and I heard Kailee let out a horrible scream and followed by even worse crying. I have to say that Kailee never crys for more than a minute or two over anything. BooBoo, hungry etc. even to this day. It is even more rare if she cries real tears. As I am heading toward them I heard another even more horrible scream and then I set off in a run. This had to be bad, real bad. I found them and Kailee was crying harder than she ever had and there was no letting up, real tears and all. My daughter said that they were walking down the halloween isle and one of the candy dishes had a hand on it and and when they passed it the hand extended out. She said that as she hurried up and turned around to go back to their cart she passed it again just as the hand was retracting back and that is were the second scream came from. Would you believe that baby girl cried hard the entire time in target, out to the car and the entire drive home. Needless to say Halloween was not a big hit with her. The very first trick-or-treater she saw was a little boy about 5 or so, he was a football player. Not an un-dead one, just a regular one. She took one look and starting crying. The poor little guy quickly took off his helmet and said, "look it's just me, a little boy." Seeing the helmet come off (did she think it was a real head?) and then seeing him talk (did she think that this was a second head?) the blood curdling scream began and halloween ended. As for the little football player? He got extra candy because now he started to cry. Poor babies, they both scared the heck out of each other and they didn't even know why. Sorry for the length NaNa 2 Kailee
