A Helping Hand From the "Grandparents"

I thought this was kind of neat. It seems that grandparents help out in nature as well:

"A team of scientists led by the University of East Anglia has discovered the existence of ‘grandparent’ helpers in the Seychelles warbler – the first time this behaviour, which rarely occurs except in humans, has been observed in birds."

A helping hand from the ‘grandparents’

On Defense, Number 19, Larry Robinson (and his Grandson)
Larry Robinson
The fact that it's been over a month since I last posted shows you how easy it is to get caught up life and forget to blog. Do not follow my example!

Anwway, every morning I scan through my news feeds on the train using my handy dandy phone. It's really amazing. I used to read the newspaper every day, but now I just get the same info on my phone. But I'll leave that for another post.

I go over news, info relating to my job here at Grandparents.com and the latest hockey news. I *love* hockey and I try to eat up everything I can whenever I can.

This morning my porifessional feeds crossed pathes with my hockey news when I saw the above picture of former hockey player Larry Robinson standing with his grandson Dylan while his number was retired by the Montreal Canadiens. Robinson is currently an assistant coach for my favorite team, the New Jersey Devils, but he used to be an incredile defenseman for Les Habs.

What a thrill it must have been for both Robinson and his grandson. It's not every day that you get your number retired by a pro sports team and to share it with a grandson must make it even more special for both. (picture credit: AFP/Getty Images)

Fun Trip to Drive-In Cut Short

Well here's a story you don't hear every day.

Fun Trip to Drive-in Cut Short

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) -- He told police he just wanted to take the grandkids out for a spin and treat them to some food at an area drive-in restaurant.

But Grandpa was warned by a Beckley police officer that hauling four children, all around age 4, in a motorboat being pulled by a lawnmower isn't a very good idea.

Gramps wasn't charged with any crimes.

What kind of stuff have you done with your grandchildren that has been a little outside of the norm?

Around the Web

A few times a week I troll around the Web looking for links that we feature in the Grandparents.com Newsletter. What?!?! You're not signed up? Well, get on that!

Anyway, I thought I'd feature a few of those links here in this blog as well with some additional commentary. Why not, right? Here we go:

** Grandmother Returns from Iraq - I thought this was an inspirational story whether or not you're a grandparent.

** Laptop With a Mission Widens Its Audience - I think I'm going to get one (well, two actually) of these for Christmas. It seems like a neat toy to mess around with and I love the idea that one would also go to somewhere in the world that could really use it.

** 20 Innovations That Have Radically Changed the College Experience - I think I'm glad they didn't have energy drinks when I was in college. I slept so little as it was.

** Illustrated Body Mass Index Examples - This is kind of neat. "Real" people are uploading pictures of themselves along with their BMI (body mass index) number. You'll be surprised by some of the results.

If you have links that you'd like to let us know about, leave a comment!

Woman Gives Birth to Own Grandchildren

Well here's a story you don't see every day: Woman Gives Birth to Own Grandchildren

"A 51-year-old surrogate mother for her daughter has given birth to her own twin grandchildren in northeastern Brazil, the delivery hospital said."

Talk about going the extra mile. They will surely have a very special bond.

Thanks to ParentDish for pointing me to the story.

Rockabye Baby

I do a fair amount of surfing around the Web at work (let's call it "completive research" or something) and I just came upon this:

Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Led Zeppelin

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Why didn't I know about this sooner? I don't have kids of my own yet, but I know a few future grandparents who better have this on their list when I do!

If you're not a Led Zeppelin fan, they also have The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and a handful of more contemporary bands.

You can check out more at their site: Rockabye Baby

3 Generations and 3 Strikes

I visited my (preggers) sister and her husband this weekend. They threw a "baby-cue" to celebrate the upcoming arrival of their son or daughter rather than the standard baby shower. Despite the name of the event, there was no grilled meat to be found. I'll leave that for another post I guess.

Anyway, my parents made the five hour drive to attend and spend some time with my sister and brother-in-law and my sister's son/their grandchild/my newphew. He's 7, going on 18. He's really something else -- so smart and full of energy.

I ended up as a wiffle ball pitcher for about 2 hours. At one point I was pictching for my batting newphew. My father was behind me playing in the field. I didn't realize it at the time, but it hit me on the bud ride home that this was a real "family moment" -- three generations playing together.

That's the stuff that memories are made of.

The Fun Stuff
I was talking with a grandparent friend of mine yesterday about the role of grandparents and they casually said something that really stuck with me:

"Parents have enough to do.."

While parents are charged with the task of raising a child and keeping them healthy and safe, this grandparent thought it was his job to take his grandkid to the sorts of places that parents don't have enough time or energy to visit on their own. The park, the circus, the beach... you know, the fun stuff.

Not a bad gig if you ask me
