When my family gets together at Thanksgiving, and there's that holiday pause between dinner and dessert, someone will invariably break into song. And it's only a split-second before the rest of us join in. An old classic, a current hit, or a made-up-on-the-spot number: Song, smiles, and laughter fill the room.
As your family waits for dessert on Thanksgiving, introduce these two raps; they're just for Grandparents.com, inspired by what goes on in most any household on a holiday. Chances are, you'll relate. Then get a little sentimental with the oldies but goodies that follow. Happy Thanksgiving!
TG FOR THE GPs
by Betty Mack
Hey, hey all you G’s you know what time it is,
Pull out the pots, grab the apron, go in the kitchen and get biz.
Fancy food, delish dessert, and happy Holiday cheer,
Oh yeah you know — Thanksgiving's here.
It’s all the G’s who keep this special day going,
Mess around, don’t show up, and you’ll be blowing.
A 25-pound turkey for Grandpa to slice,
A wish that Uncle Joe wouldn't bring his wife.
She always comes with an empty pot,
And when she leaves, she's got a heck-of-a lot.
But we G’s don’t mind cause it’s a time for sharing,
Giving, loving, and most of all caring.
Caring for our families, some far, some near,
And on Thanksgiving we get down with the ones that are here.
Bring on the dressing and the gravy and the yams and the rice,
Later on have some coffee or some wine and a slice.
Of grandma's pie that will melt in your mouth,
Come on G’s, you know what I’m talking about.
So all you G’s this one is for you,
For all the good things that you always do.
We celebrate the backbone of the family,
You, our grandparents, 100 percent G.
Yeah, you heard me.
WHAT DOES THANKSGIVING MEAN TO ME?
by Betty Mack
T-is for the turkey in the center of the table
H-is hoping to have some if your belly makes you able
A-is for all the aunts who always show up late
N-is for the nephews who bring more than one date
K-is for the kindness we show our family
S-is for the smiles so fake, even Stevie Wonder can see
G-is for the good times we share with so much glee
I-is for the invited who show up way too early
V-is for the values that keep our family alive
I-is for the invaders who show up at 5
N-is never forgetting all the fun on Thanksgiving day
G-is for giving thanks to all grandparents who have paved the way
Albuquerque the Turkey (sung to the tune of My Darling Clementine)
by Author Unknown
Albuquerque is a turkey,
and he's feathered and he's fine.
And he wobbles, and he gobbles
And he's absolutely mine.
He's the best pet
That you can get
Better than a dog or cat
He's my Albuquerque Turkey
And I'm mighty proud of that!!
Five Little Turkeys
by Author Unknown
Five little turkeys standing by the door,
One waddled off, and then there were four.
Four little turkeys under a tree,
One waddled off, and then there were three.
Three little turkeys with nothing to do,
One waddled off, and then there were two.
Two little turkeys in the noonday sun,
One waddled off, and then there was one.
One little turkey better run away,
For soon will come Thanksgiving day.
Over the River and Through the Wood/Boys' Thanksgiving
by Lydia Maria Child
Over the river and through the woods
To Grandfather's house we go.
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through white and drifted snow.
Over the river and through the wood
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the wood
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring,
Ting-a-ling-ling!
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!
Over the river and through the wood,
Trot fast, my dapple gray!
Spring over the ground
Like a hunting hound,
For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river and through the wood,
And straight through the barnyard gate.
We seem to go
Extremely slow —
It is so hard to wait!
Over the river and through the wood
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun!
Is the pudding done?
Hurray for the pumpkin pie!
Continue the laughter with this humor piece on The Thanksgiving Boss.
