Sure, any trip to a cemetery is inherently somber, but the national burial ground is a fascinating place for grandchildren to visit nonetheless. Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried here, as far back as the Revolutionary War to our present engagement in the Middle East. A Tourmobile bus provides an easy way to explore the grounds so you won’t have to do a lot of walking. You can get on and off as often as you wish. Your grandchildren will especially like to watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which takes place every hour in the winter and every half-hour during the summer. Other highlights include the Eternal Flame of the Kennedy grave, the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial, and the USS Maine Memorial.
Info: Admission: Free; Tourmobile: Adults $7, ages 65 and older $6, 3 to 11 $4
Hours: Daily April to September 8am to 7pm, October to March 8am to 5pm;
Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter

The Audubon society is the last word on all things birds, and what better place for you and your grandchildren to observe the migratory and native varieties of D.C.’s feathered friends than their two local wildlife sanctuaries? With one in Maryland and the other in Northern Virginia, you can easily access their family programs that include guided hikes, outdoor explorations, bird walks, and more. Most programs are geared to a specific age group, so check out their website for current programs. (Pre-registration is required.) Special events are held throughout the year to bring families together to enjoy nature.

Barston’s Child's Play offers a great selection of toys, games, puzzles, books, music, arts and crafts, and all the other wonderful things kids should do when they’re not playing with computers and video games. The staff is super knowledgeable, should you have any trouble deciding between two board games you’ve never played, or picking out party costumes. At the Rockville store, your grandchildren can participate in weekly story times, crafts, and face painting.

This is a great family-style restaurant where you create your own stir-fry. You choose your own ingredients from a variety of meats, seafood, vegetables, salads, sauces, and spices. Then, pass your dish on to be cooked before you on a giant circular grill. Your grandchildren will love choosing their own ingredients and who knows, maybe they’ll even try something new!
