Forum Post We are having our first grandchild. She is due in December. But everyone is excited. My siblings already have grandchildren. So I need a name. My sisters are all called "Nanny" by their grandchildren. I want something different. My husband does like "Papa". Any suggestions? We really need help!

My mother was Ghee Ghee and my father was Pop Pop. When I became a grandmother she became Nana and I am OMA. I liked Ghee Ghee it was cute different and fun . I believe it is Welsh for grandmother.

I don't know about picking your own name. My granddaughter called me just plain old "Gramma" till last year....she suddenly started calling me "Granny"...no reason...she was 18 this May....sometimes, you just have to wait. Course, you can always make up some cutesy name if you want or wait till the baby can talk and he/she just "rolls" a name off that little tongue and you fall in love with it. I really like being "Granny" the best.....even her friends call me Granny. Most of them are young military people away from home, so it's even more special to me. Just another opinon.

My mother is called Nana, which is different than what any other grandmother/greatgrandmother in my family are called. My ex-wife is from the Azores, which are Portugese Islands, and my granddaughter calls her Vava, which may not be the correct spelling, but it's another name. Good luck, and you are getting ready for a new part of your life that will be better than even when raising your own. I am excited for you, as I know the change it has made in me.

When my son married for the first time his wife ( 7years older than him) had 2 girls so I became a instant "Grandma Bonnie" which was ok but then....always a then right! There was Samantha Loise, hope I spelled the 2nd name right been a while, now we had a problem. Just on my side was Granny whom was their Great-Great Grandma, Grandma and Grandpa Bug's, Grandma and Grandpa Stef..... and then me and my husband, The girls had been calling him Papa so that was ok but Grandma Bonnie just was a mouth full so I chose "Memaw" for them to call me. Now it sounds funny when a 14yearold is yelling in a crowd "memaw I am over here". I told her you can call me Grandma and like a trio singing I was told sorry to late now you will always be Memaw. Now as for letting them decide I not sure, my Uncles 2 granson's call him "Hey" and my aunt is "Meme" I think. Thats better than my cousin grandchildren call her "Weewee" no don't think I could handle that so You be the judge my friend just remember can last a long long time!
Going to be a new Memaw soon so it just keep rolling along!

I am called Meemaw. I don't know if that's the correct spelling or not. You can spell it anyway you want to. But it's a combination of Mom-my and Grand-ma which makes sense. Now everybody calls me Meemaw even my son, brother and people I work with. It just seems to fit. The tag on my car is #1Meemaw.

I started out as MaMaw-granddaughter couldn't say Grandma and I really liked it-different. Daughter got her to say grandma so we're Grandma and Grandpa(my youngest grandson used to call me and my mom Grandpa as well as my husband and dad) My mom and dad are Great Grandma and Great Grandpa

My kids call my mom Grandma Bubbles (bubbles was her nickname in high school) they call my step dad Poppy and my real dad Grandpa.
My grandson will call us either vovo and vuvu (which is grandma and grandpa in Portuguese) or grandma and grandpa, unless he comes up with something on his own when he starts to talk.
My nieces and nephews call their grandmother Mem.
I also heard someone I knew called memem
I sometimes even call myself gram gram. I am sure the first time your grandchild decides to call you something it will stick and it will be wonderful

I am also a nana and love it. It's also easy to say so you may be their first word! I hope to hear them call me nana when they are in their 40's but forever long it will be the sound of love to my ears. Sometimes they give you a name of their own chosing.

Thanks so much for the wonderful replies. I misspelled Nana in my request. My step-daughter just came back into my life after her father (my ex-husband) die in May. She has two very sweet little boys. The youngest one called me grandma and gave me a big kiss. I fell in love when I first met them. I am 46 but I have been told that I don't look like I am in my 40's which is why I did not want to be called grandma...but once I heard him say those words my heart was filled with joy. I think I will just wait ... I had a good teacher growing up. My Bigmama was the best and I hope to be just like her. Blessings to each and everyone ...
